Do you flirt with buying the brand new iPad Pro? The big question for most is whether the latest Apple device will do the job. The first things first: with $ 799 starting for an 11-inch model and 64 GB and $ 999 for the 12.9-inch version I've tested, the newest power-user tablet is unquestionably the best iPad from Apple . It is also the most expensive in a wide range, especially if you use the accessories that most of you need or look forward to - especially the $ 129 Apple Pencil pen and a $ 179 or $ 199 Smart Keyboard Folio. Maximum storage capacity (1-terabyte), choose a model with mobile phone, pick up the pencil, the keyboard and other accessories and you spend - years - considerably more than $ 2,000.That is a small ransom. To find out if it is worthy of you, you first have to consider: what do you need it for? Since Apple often compares iPads with different devices, let's see how the new 12.9-inch Pro is compared step-by-step with other possible options.

iPad Pro versus MacBook Air:
It is no secret Apple promotes the iPad as a standard for a laptop. Apple CEO Tim Cook pointed to a launch event for both products in Brooklyn, New York, last week that iPads have sold rival notebooks in the past year and iPads are faster than 92 percent of laptops sold at the time. Cook talked about competition from Windows PC vendors, not about Apple's own new notebook, but the not so subtle suggestion is that the iPad Pro could probably replace or replace a laptop. It turns out that Apple had long renewed its iconic MacBook Air. (Let's assume that there is room in your budget for just one of these expensive new toys.) The new iPad Pro has a lot of appeal, thanks to an A12 Bionic chip that is a speed demon. The graphics are also beautiful. And the USB-C port of the iPad Pro - yes, it is also on the new MacBook Air - connects to a large number of devices, including external displays and power chargers. That's all right. Here are the reservations:

Dongles and external devices: be prepared for more ponies for the dongles you need to deal with this new USB-C port ecosystem. It is no coincidence that Apple has added a few such dongles to my evaluation unit, including one that allows you to connect a pair of headphones to the tablet now that the standard headphone jack is gone, just as it has disappeared on iPhones. Apple retained the connection to the MacBook Air. Here is another game breaker. Due to incompatibility with software, you can not connect external storage disks to the iPad Pro via USB-C, because the tablet can not decipher the files on the disk. Score one for your regular laptop.

Goodbye, tangle of cables: In combination with USB-C on both the iPad Pro and the MacBook Air, Apple also said so long to the Lightning port on the Pro and ordinary USB on the MacBook Air. That can at least be the guarantee for the many cords and adapters that you have been using for years.

Face vs. Touch: the iPad Pro also followed the lead of the recent iPhones by getting rid of the home button and Touch ID fingerprint sensor in favor of Face ID facial recognition. The learning curve is minimal. In this alternative universe, the new MacBook Air has no Face ID, but sport Touch ID.

The screen: a short word about the beautiful high-resolution displays that you can find on both Apple devices. The screen on the iPad Pro, as with other iPads, relies on the user-friendly iOS 12 operating system; the new MacBook Air has no touchscreen like all other Macs. When making your tablet or laptop choice, that is something to think about.

Becoming creative: if you are an artist, architect or other creative professional, the iPad Pro is probably the best option, because you can draw or write with the optional pencil. If you want such a possibility on a more traditional laptop, consider any number of Windows 10 notebooks that support touch computing, as that is not a stunt for the MacBook Air.

Size: both the iPad Pro and MacBook are clearly thin and small enough to travel with. But if you want to illuminate the load in your backpack, the iPad Pro comes with just over a pound from your winner.

Typing options: the reverse is true if your primary decision lies with the keyboard. Whatever you think of the butterfly-like keyboard on the air - I think it's fine; not everyone will agree - it is better than the keyboard that can be found on the optional Smart Keyboard Folio. And the Folio does not have a trackpad, while the air is silky smooth and more spacious.

Keyboard cover: a short note about some improvements Apple has made to the Smart Keyboard Folio for the iPad Pro, which also serves as a protective cover. That cover now protects both sides of the tablet. It is also slightly more versatile because you can support the iPad with the cover from two viewing angles. But other hybrids of tablets / laptops - I think of Microsoft's Surface Pro and the upcoming Pixel Slate from Google - let you get the devices up from infinite angles.

My conclusion: this is a great iPad for those of you who need the tablet, but for most computer tasks, stay with a laptop.

iPad Pro versus game console:
In Brooklyn Apple told us all that the graphics on the iPad Pro match those on an
Xbox One S. And to underline this, they released an executive from 2K Games to show off "NBA2K19". His bold performance on stage claims: the iPad Pro offers an "experience that brings consoles for the first time in trouble". From a technical point of view, this may be true, but the claim still feels like a piece. Even among gamers, anyone who spends so much money for an iPad will do so for a number of other reasons. All this aside - and I'm more of a casual gamer than a junkie - I was impressed by the visuals, textures and smooth animations during my own turn at "NBA2K19." The 12.9-inch display offers a generous window on the action, with fairly detailed graphics that cover everything from the tattoos on the player's arms to the cheering spectators in the arena, dressed up in fanfans of their own city. I played with thumbs, not a great replacement for a real game controller, but had fun just the same - even if the LeBron James-led Los Angeles Lakers team I ran was downplayed by a Denver Nuggets team. I also liked playing and driving a lot of different cars by tilting the iPad Pro in the "Gear Club" app.

My conclusion: Yes, we understand that it is almost absurd to suggest that the gaming experience on an iPad will be the same as that of an Xbox connected to the wall-mounted TV in your home. That said, the games I tried were fun and looked good. But if you are exclusively looking for a special gaming experience - without all the iPad bells and whistles - you can best use a console or portable option, such as the Nintendo Switch, or even play on your smartphone or PC.

iPad Pro versus other iPads:
As I said above, the latest iPad Pro is the best iPad so far. But because this is the best, that does not mean that this is the best iPad for you. All current iPads run the same iOS 12 software, so the steep bump in price usually has to do with speed, performance, screen size and quality and storage capacity, which may be too big for many of you. Apple's tablet line-up is now quite extensive, with an entry-level $ 329 (up) with a 9.7-inch display and 32 GB of storage, which is a great choice for the students it was originally thrown at . This iPad even supports a version of the Apple Pencil that was previously only reserved for Pro models. (Important note: we are talking about the older $ 99 pencil, not the newer magnetic variety introduced with the new iPad Pro).

My conclusion: if you need a more robust tablet but do not want to do everything with the latest models, you can still get an older generation of iPad Pro for the Apple Pencil of the latest generation. And Apple still sells a perfectly capable and an older 10.5-inch mode for $ 649.
